Tomorrow's Harvest

A view of Perry-winkle Farm (Cathy Jones and Michael Perry) in Chatham County, NC.

In my present book project, tentatively titled Tomorrow's Harvest, I am exploring the links between sustainable agriculture and sustainable community in the Piedmont of North Carolina. North Carolina has perhaps the most vibrant sustainable agriculture community in the southern United States. Tomorrow’s Harvest will focus on the cultural conditions that have fostered the growth of sustainable agriculture in North Carolina and how, in turn, the development of sustainable agriculture has affected various North Carolina communities.
This is a search for a living, breathing, rural community — not an urban lifestyle transplanted into the country, nor a family farming model "preserved" by government programs and cultural stereotypes, but something that is new and yet recognizably rural. I end Garden Spot with the question hanging: is there a future for rural America? Tomorrow's Harvest is an attempt to answer that question.
