17. The veil of abundance

One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what are they among so many?” —John 6:8–9

Even the squirrels needn’t work for food,
but sweep largesse
from the crusted snow
where careless birds have spilled it.
Who would notice a couple of fish?
Who notices the lack?
