16. Testimony of the groceries

My testimony is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me. If I bear witness to myself, my testimony is not true. —John 5:30–31

Beyond the sunken
cabbages, the molting onions, brown
bananas thirty cents the pound — bright
shards of optimism: The cereal
is packed with power! Yogurt bursts
with flavor! Juice is boosted! Even bags
of grapefruit sing their glory.
Dust thou art, and chemicals,
and to chemicals you’ll return, after
the fast is broken.
