13. Ever after

When Jesus saw him and knew that he had been lying there a long time, he said to him. “Do you want to be healed?” —John 5:6

Where are they now, the spontaneously healed? Where’s
the cable TV special on their lives?
Jairus’ daughter, I presume, recovered
nicely, and the centurion’s servant. But what about
the blind? the poor? the lame man with his mat?
Sure, he said — heal me. Then what? Did he know
how to work? Did he know how to live,
with his identity gone? Walking might be
the easy part. There is no happily ever after
in this world: be careful what you wish for.
